Your Wedding Timeline

I’ve been meeting with couples that are planning their weddings. When we start talking about how much time there will be for dancing, many are surprised to see that there is not as much “party” time left in a typical 5 hour reception. So to give couples and brides an idea, I decided to put together a sample timeline.

Let’s say your reception is from 5:00 – 10:00PM:

5:00PM – Cocktail Hour

  • This is a time for you and the wedding party to go around for photos
  • DJ can play a selection of soft background music of your choice

6:00PM – Guests sit for Dinner

  • DJ/MC directs guest to reception room and asks them to take their seats
  • DJ/MC introduces himself to audience and prepares them for your Grand Entrance

6:10PM – The Grand Entrance

  • DJ/MC announces the parents of the bride and of the groom
  • Followed by the wedding party, made of honor & best man
  • Then the newly wed couple

6:15PM – Couple’s First Dance

  • Once in the room, after a minute, DJ/MC will announce the couples first dance
  • Sometimes the wedding party will join the couple on a second song
  • Halfway through that second song we can ask other couple to dance

6:20PM – Father/Daughter, Son/Mother Dances

  • Now the father and daughter dance together
  • Next the groom and his mom

6:30PM – Dinner Served/Buffet Opens

  • DJ/MC will announce dinner to be serve of that the buffet is open
  • Might be a good idea to do a buffet by table numbers if there is only one station and/or a lot of guests

7:15PM – Speech and Toast

  • At the end of dinner is the best time to do speech and toast
  • The father of the bride usually gives thanks to all the guests for attending
  • Then the Best Man will give his toast
  • It is best not to let anyone else give a toast as this takes away time from your party

7:30PM – Cake

  • I think that right after the toast is the best time to cut the cake
  • Everyone still looks neat and will have the best pictures
  • I've been told by event planners that it's best to do the cake towards the end as some people may think the event is over and leave early.

8:00PM – Open Dancing

  • DJ get’s things started with a nice song that will get everyone on the dance floor

8:45PM – Bouquet and Garter Toss

  • DJ/MC will announce this
  • You can pick songs for each of these activities to make them much more fun

9:00PM – Open Dancing (La Hora Loca – if you are doing this)

  • The “Hora Loca” is very popular in Miami and around the country, and I think it should be saved for the very last hour of your event
  • Here is when we turn the reception info an all out Carnival with stilt walkers, funny hats, glasses and great Hora Loca songs

9:55PM - Last Song

  • Nearing the end DJ announces the last song of the evening

10:00PM – Off to the Honeymoon!

Following this timeline you will have about 1:45 minutes of dancing in your 5 hour reception. It’s not a lot but if done right, you will have a spectacular time.

And remember:

When asked 81% of guests say the thing they remember most about a wedding is the entertainment.
